About Us

Read the Howling Monkey Guitar Picks story and contact us here.

The rainforest. Humid, sunny, full of vegetation, animals and critters of all kinds. A place where the circle of life is fully evident. Where monkeys live, play and howl in the trees. Where trees grow and shed their seeds to spread new life throughout the forest.

Western New York. Cold, gray, full of concrete, cars and crazy people of all kinds. A place where snow falls in April. Where people live, eat chicken wings, and play music in bars. Where the we dream for a championship from our professional sports teams and it never comes to true.

In the dead of winter, January 2013, where there was not a band to gig with and needing refuge from the cold, Howling Monkey was born. After trying many guitar picks from many brands and materials, Tagua was introduced to us, and the rainforest and Western New York merged into one spectacular place. It didn't take long for Howling Monkey to take off. After only a couple weeks of getting various designs into guitar players' hands and solidifying a final design, our picks were ordered from guitarists all around the world and the USA. We've been growing quickly and will continue to do so with the support of so many loyal and happy customers.

Other guitar pick manufacturers claim that their picks are "hand made", where they are actually cut from a resin based material and then hand shaped from there. Howling Monkey, on the other hand (no pun intended, well...maybe so) everything is handmade from the beginning. The tagua nut is sliced, then shaped into a pick shape through multiple steps, ergonomic grooves are cut on the front, and the pick is shaved further with beveled edges then dyed - all done painstakingly by hand. We do our own graphic design for our website, packaging and marketing...we even screen print our apparel and sew our own bags.

Brian Staebell, owner and founder of Howling Monkey Hand Made Guitar Picks, is an avid music lover and guitarist. He has been playing guitar (and tooling around) on other instruments for 18 years. He has many years in the musical instrument retail, sports retail and tourism industries. He has been instrumental in the marketing and product development in each company he has ever been employed by. He values every customer he meets and is excited to bring Howling Monkey Hand Made Guitar Picks to you.

Our Philosophy on Environmental/Economic Sustainability:

At Howling Monkey Tagua Nut Guitar Picks we strive to bring you high quality tagua guitar picks. Tagua Nut is a natural, environmentally sustainable substance found in South America (Ecuador/Columbia). The tagua nuts are harvested through a coalition employing over 1800 native Ecuadorians providing good income that would normally not be there without this import. Unlike wood guitar picks that require manufacturers to harvest entire trees, tagua nut picks are environmentally friendly--we're just picking the fruit. And since tagua nuts grow on trees, there's no need to harm animals like horn, bone and hoof guitar pick producers may do. Our supplier meets ISO 9002 standards and is certified by SGS International Certification Services.
